Larvae of Common (British) Frog (Grass Frog) Rana temporaria

  • no external gills (tadpole)
  • eyes not prominent
  • Underside not black to grey, belly mostly copper spotted
  • fin tail not recticulated
  • back without transparent edge
  • upper crest starting near end of trunk, no big spots on the crest
  • Total length:
    up to about 42 mm
  • The colour of the back varies, usually dark with tiny metallic dots.
  • From about 10 mm body length the four lower rows of labial teeth are recognizable with a strong lens (picture)– so distinguishable from Moor frog larvae. In order to see these lines separated a carefully dabbed drop of saliva can be of help.
