Widely distributed through Southern, Western and Central Europe.
Absent from Great Britain and Ireland, Scandinavia, the coastal region
of Northern and Baltic Sea, and east of the Carpathians.
(rarely up to 20 cm)
S.s.salamandra – Yellow-spotted F. – and
S.s.terrestris – Yellow-striped F.;
distribution areas partly overlapping.
At first development of the larvae inside female body. Birth of larvae
after about 8 months. In March-July 8-60 larvae are deposited generally
in shaded, cold, running water, rich in oxygen.
